Dry Eye Treatments
Revitalize Your Vision at Revive Eye Spa
We are the first Ophthalmology practice within several states to introduce cutting-edge technologies aimed at aiding dry eye patients. Unlike traditional approaches that primarily manage symptoms, these treatments provide a more definitive solution to the underlying problem.
Studies indicate that 85% of dry eye patients suffer from some level of eyelid oil gland plugging or atrophy. Insufficient or poor-quality oil in the tear film leads to tear evaporation and subsequent inflammation, resulting in various issues such as dry eye, blepharitis, styes, and eyelid cosmetic changes.
Symptoms of dry eye include blurred vision, discomfort, fluctuating vision, inability to wear contact lenses, and eye strain.
Patients often undergo numerous treatments, including artificial tears, vitamins, Lipiflow, Punctal plugs, and prescription eye drops and nasal sprays, which may offer limited relief and come with associated costs and side effects.
Our new Envision platform allows for the administration of Forma-i (radiofrequency) and Lumecca-i (intense pulsed light) therapies targeting eyelid and periorbital tissues.
These treatments effectively address blocked oil glands and may even stimulate tissue regrowth where glands have atrophied.
While fully FDA-approved, it’s important to note that this treatment is not covered by insurance.
What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to irritation, redness, and a gritty feeling in the eyes. This condition can result from various factors, including:
- Age: Dry eye is more common as you get older, particularly among people over the age of 50.
- Environmental Conditions: Wind, dry air, and smoke can increase tear evaporation.
- Screen Use: Prolonged use of computers, smartphones, and tablets can reduce blink rate, contributing to tear evaporation.
- Contact Lenses: Long-term use of contact lenses can increase the risk of dry eyes.
- Medications: Certain medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, and antidepressants, can reduce tear production.
- Medical Conditions: Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and thyroid problems can affect tear production.
The Crucial Role of Meibomian Glands
The meibomian glands play a pivotal role in maintaining a healthy tear film and preventing dry eye. Located in the eyelids, these glands secrete meibum, an oily substance that prevents the evaporation of the eye’s tear film. This oil layer is essential for keeping the eyes lubricated and comfortable.
